Saiu a primeira leva de gravações feitas por diversos artistas do indie para o álbum em homenagem ao grupo The Grateful Dead, projeto capitaneado pelo trio Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner e Josh Kaufman, do excelente The National.

O projeto recebeu o nome “Day of the Dead” e será lançado dia 20 de maio. No total, serão mais de seis horas de música distribuídas em 59 faixas, divididas em três álbuns.

Artistas e bandas tipo Wilco, Justin Vernon, The War on Drugs, Flaming Lips, Mumford and Sons, Courtney Barnett, Sharon Van Etten, Lee Ranaldo, Perfume Genius e Kurt Vile botaram seus nomes no tributo, que teve conhecidas hoje algumas de suas faixas, as primeiras.

As versões publicadas foram gravadas pelo National (“Morning Dew”), Courtney Barnett (“New Speedway Boogie”), the War on Drugs (“Touch of Grey”), Phosphorescent, Jenny Lewis and Friends (“Sugaree”) e Bruce Hornsby com DeYarmond Edison, um grupo que tem como participantes Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) e a banda Megafaun, que fizeram “Black Muddy River”, informa a bíblia indie Pitchfork. As canções aparecem em vídeos psicodélicos dirigidos pelo trio Michael Brown, Nick Ciontea e Christopher Bartlett.
